Every day is a good day to give a gift to a woman you love. The Jesse Stuart Foundation Bookstore contains thousands of potential gifts, and I suggest several that are especially meaningful.

“Women” a powerful photography collection from the celebrated National Geographic archive, explores the history, challenges, and triumphs of women across 130 years and more than 50 countries. From those first documented by National Geographic photographers in remote villages around the globe to the diverse array of politicians, activists, and scientists making headlines today, each of the images gathered here tells a unique story about what it means to be female.

We also hear directly from two dozen contemporary women of substance, including New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern, teen activist Emma Gonzalez, award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, shot by acclaimed National Geographic photographer Erika Larsen. Profound and inspiring, this book is an eloquent testament to the power of women around the world.

Jean Case, who chairs the National Geographic Society’s Board of Directors, observes:

“I may have been the first woman elected Chairman of the Board in the National Geographic Society’s 131 years, but—as this book so clearly shows—women have been central to the organization’s storytelling throughout our history.

This book delves deep into National Geographic’s extensive photo archives to bring to light the wide range of women across the world who have graced the pages of the magazine and caught the eye of National Geographic’s world-renowned photographers as they cover the globe.

The chapter titles of this book appropriately embody the qualities of the images throughout: Joy, Beauty, Love, Wisdom, Strength, and Hope. I hope you are as inspired as I am by these stories and all the women who are pushing boundaries and carving new pathways in our world today. I can only imagine the transformative effect of the many contributions of women everywhere in the days ahead.”

This beautiful, oversized coffee table book is too heavy to mail, and it costs $50.00. It is available only for walk-in customers.

Another special oversized gift book for women is “Kentucky Women,” a collection of 95 biographical essays compiled and edited by Eugenia K. Potter in 1997.

Finally, I recommend a smaller set of books, “Women Who Dare.” The four books in this series profile Amelia Earhart, Helen Keller, Margaret Mead, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

These books, and thousands more, are available at the Jesse Stuart Foundation Bookstore, 4440 13th Street in Ashland. The bookstore is open for walk-in customers Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon to 3 p.m. In-store shopping at other times is available by appointment.
