Sarah Powell had worked a day for her neighbor. For her pay, she was given the choice of a quarter or a little pig who was the runt of the litter. “Sarah, I think you made a mistake by taking the pig instead of a quarter for your day’s work. This pig might die,” her mother said.  “Oh, no, Mom,” she sighed. “Little Bluetick must live. I just know that she will live,” little Sarah replied. Thus began a series of adventures that would change the fortunes of the Powell family and the little pig who grew up to be “the biggest attraction at the Greenwood County Fair.”

Between 1953 and 1971, Stuart published 8 illustrated junior books that were oriented toward character education and they remain popular today. Bluetick Pig is based on a short story that first appeared in Esquire magazine in February 1937 and later appeared in Stuart’s short story collections, A Jesse Stuart Harvest, Men of the Mountains, and Save Every Lamb.
