This book weaves a garland of Christmas experiences for the people of Southern Appalachia. All of us at the Jesse Stuart Foundation hope that each reader will find in these pages the love for others that energizes the true spirit of Christmas.

Many friends of the Stuart Foundation contributed stories and poems to this modest volume: Thomas D. Clark, Loyal Jones, Jesse Stuart, James Goode, Billy C. Clark, Harry Caudill, Jim Wayne Miller, and Marlin W. Blaine. Jim Marsh designed the cover and created the illustrations for this book which was the best seller at the 1997 Kentucky Book Fair.

My grandmother Clara Moore Clark (1892-1978), who raised me, would have enjoyed the stories in this book. When I was a small child trying to grasp the story of Christmas, I imagined that my grandmother was a lot like Jesus—she knew how to love and she knew how to forgive and she lovingly sacrificed herself for others. Whatever good I have done in this world and whatever good I may yet accomplish is a tribute to Clara M. Clark, a great teacher and a splendid role model. In loving devotion to her memory, I dedicated this book to her.

Typing Help Needed

I am working on a book entitled “Dear Deane: The Public Reaction to Jesse Stuart’s Death.” I have hundreds of sympathy letters which Jesse’s wife Naomi Deane Norris Stuart entrusted to me in 1990, three years before her death. These letters need to be transcribed, and there is more work than one person can do. I need at least six good typists to volunteer their assistance. I know you’re busy now, but after the Christmas holidays are over, please stop by our office and I will discuss this project with you in more detail.
